A Bedroom Sleep Sanctuary to Boost Author Vibes

One of the most important forms of self-care is getting enough rest.

As an author, I remember a time when I used to push myself to stay up late to write, because I felt like being more productive and “getting the book done” was a higher priority than my health. It took me a long time to realize how crucial rest and being in balance truly is.  Our bodies do amazing things while we sleep—this is the optimal time for them to rejuvenate, regenerate, and heal!

Being a happy author—and achieving whatever success means to you—requires down time and good, uninterrupted sleep. However, you might not always think about the actual environment in which you sleep. Is your bedroom a sleep haven, and a place where true rest comes easily? Does it have a high vibe energy? Is it a space that fills you with joy and immediately raises your own vibration?

Everything is energy, and what we surround ourselves with has such an impact on our health and well-being. Since we spend nearly half our time in our bedrooms, I’d love to share some ideas with you on how to make this space a beautiful sleep sanctuary so you can boost the vibes in your author life.

#1: Get rid of clutter.

Imagine this…you walk into your bedroom in the evening, and your space immediately fills you with a sense of peace. There’s no laptop open on the duvet, or cell phone waiting for you to connect with author Instagram posts, or a notebook to write down your novel’s new plot points. No! This space is clear of all of that. This is the ideal vibration for your bedroom— a place of calm tranquility, a sleep oasis where you can truly relax and rest.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing that takes away from this more so than a messy, cluttery room, especially if it keeps you in the vibe of “doing” versus resting. Objects, and even dust, all hold their own energetic frequencies. The more things you have in the room, especially if they’re items that promote activity (such as televisions, or your computer that’s simply screaming at you to open it up and write one more chapter), only create more energetic “noise” in a space that thrives on peace and solitude.

To let yourself really sink into a state of deep rest when you go to bed, it’s important to clean and declutter your bedroom. Relaxation is easier to achieve if your mind isn’t focused on other things (like a towering stack of old books in the corner, or a desk heaped with random author to-do stuff.) If you have space elsewhere, take all nonessentials from your room and move them somewhere else. You’ll be so happy…a tidy and organized bedroom will be the perfect sleep haven.

#2: Add beautiful touches that fit your personal style.

What is your personal style? Simple and cozy? Elegant and tranquil? Sumptuous goddess luxury? Crazy messy author? (Don’t worry, if you’ve chosen this last one, keep on reading—it will help!)

Whatever style most resonates with you, take some time to decorate your bedroom with home decor that fits your personality. I promise… it’ll make such a difference! Enhancing the visual appeal of your bedroom will immediately bring in some good vibes.  You’ll love being in there, and it might even encourage you to go to bed earlier. (More sleep is a win for self-care, and a nice precursor to a day of writing!)

The key to creating the perfect sleep sanctuary is to avoid anything that is super vivid or “loud”. Choose colors in softer tones, such as neutrals. Tans, beiges, pale golds are fantastic if you’re looking for warmth, or you could opt for cooler shades in greys, pale greens, or blues. White is also a beautiful, classic choice.

Wall art in soft and subdued styles—such as floral, natural, or abstract—is a good option for wall decor. Avoid any art that is bright or jarring or even downright weird…you don’t want to be distracted while going to bed.

Adding furniture accents to enhance your space can add some more beauty to your room—options to add might be a few gorgeous lamps for either side of the bed, a plush rug, and a soft, luxurious throw blanket to drape across the bed.

#3: Use blue light blocking bulbs.

I hadn’t thought much about the effects of artificial blue light in my bedroom until my doctor recommended blue light blocking light bulbs to me. I’d already made a pact with myself to stop writing on my laptop after 8pm a long time ago, but I hadn’t really considered light sources. I’d been telling my doctor about some sleep issues, and he immediately jumped into a discussion of where I could get the best red light bulbs for sleep.

Here’s the truth…it has been such an amazing game changer for my sleep environment and overall health! I’ve been falling asleep right away and sleeping throughout the night.

I’d love to explain all of this a little bit first, so let’s talk about blue light and red light.

On the visible light spectrum, blue-violet light is on one side, while orange-red light is on the other. Blue light carries more energy while orange-red is less intense. (This makes sense—if you think of orange-red light, you might bring up images of gently flickering candles or a fire, while blue light may represent the bright, vivid screen of your laptop.)

Natural blue light, such as exposure from sunlight, is actually beneficial for our health. It helps to regulate our circadian rhythms. However, extended exposure to artificial sources of blue light (electronic devices, computer screens, and both LED and fluorescent bulbs) can have negative effects on our internal body clocks. (Yes, beautiful authors, this is totally about you working on your projects late into the night!) It can disrupt the secretion of melatonin (the hormone your body produces to regulate sleep), and can cause other health issues, too. Here’s a scientific research study that explains more fully the relationship between light sources and sleep.

Thankfully, there are a lot of red light products available to use in your sleep haven! The products that I personally use and love come from Block Blue Light. I use the Sweet Dreams Light bulb, which gives off the most beautiful, amber hue. It gives my bedroom ambiance such a warm, golden glow! I also read with the Multi-Mode Blue Blocking Book Light. I simply clamp it to the top of my book and read until I start to drift off to sleep.

In addition to using blue light blocking light bulbs in your bedroom sleep sanctuary, it’s a good idea to make sure your bedroom is completely dark. Any kind of light—from a charger, clock, or outside— may disrupt your sleep. If eliminating all light is an issue, you might try a sleep mask.

In my room, I remove all electronics (including my laptop!), and use blackout curtains to ensure my space is super dark. Blackout curtains are available in many gorgeous styles and colors—the ones I have are a light taupe to go with my neutral décor. There’s no need to go with dark colors (unless it matches your décor) to still achieve the blackout effect and to improve both your sleep and health.

#4: Try essential oils for tranquility.

I used to love using scented candles in my bedroom before sleep—so calming, fragrant, and perfectly ambient, what’s not to adore? Then I discovered that a lot of scented candles are made with toxic substances. While they burn, they release these chemical toxins into the air and your sleeping space.

Not the ideal situation for a beautiful author rest sanctuary!

Although there are many non-toxic candles available, (such as these made from soy—I completely understand if you simply need your candles!) using essential oils for bedtime can offer you the same aromatic relaxation benefits.

Essential oils are made from the essences of plants, and retain the beautiful vibrational elements of nature. When you diffuse them into the air, or use them internally or topically, you’re receiving the vibrational health benefits that the plant has to offer.

The best essential oils for the bedroom are those that truly help with tranquility, relaxation, and promoting good sleep. They can help you unwind from a day or evening of writing, taking your mind off your characters, your plot, your challenges, etc…so that you can be clear and free of worry, and can truly focus on rest.

My favorite bedtime essential oil is lavender. It’s wonderful for reducing anxiety. I place a few drops into a diffuser, and allow the gorgeous aroma to fill the space. It’s gentle and tranquil and fills my mind with peace. You can also add a few drops on pillows or bedding, or apply it topically, such as with a roll on.

Another great essential oil for restful sleep is ylang ylang.  It comes from the flowers of a tropical tree in Asia, and promotes a calming and positive atmosphere.

And don’t forget chamomile! You might already drink chamomile tea as part of your nighttime ritual—I personally love it in the evening when I’m ready to wind down. Diffusing chamomile essential oil infuses your space with its aroma and healing vibes, and you can even use it internally for a soothing effect.

Overall, essential oils can be a really healthy addition to add to your sleep space. Fantastic magic…and science!

#5: Choose bedding that makes you feel like a goddess.

Is there anything better than the feel of beautiful sheets against your skin? (Well, perhaps a few things, but we’ll save those for another blog post. Or maybe the next romance novel! I’ll keep you posted.)

Using all of your senses—especially the sense of touch—is a great way to connect with your divine feminine energy and your creativity. Part of the joy of a gorgeous sleep space is the elements within it that really enhance this sense of touch, like bedding that you truly love.

Do you like cool and silky sheets? Or ones that are soft and cozy? Do you prefer duvet covers or comforters? What kind of pillow helps to align your body best? Choosing the bedding that feels really good for you is so important for achieving a night of restful sleep.

You deserve to have nice things, Goddess!

And as I’d mentioned earlier, it’s good to pick out products that are natural and made from materials that are grown without harmful chemicals and pesticides. Good options are fibers like organic cotton, linen, bamboo, or hemp. I really like the sheets and duvet covers from Magnolia Organics, and my favorite comforters come from The Company Store. If you’re searching for something to give your bedroom a unique look, you may want to choose bedding with beautiful patterns, textures, and details.

Whatever you do choose to decorate your bedroom with, make sure it makes you feel good…peaceful, relaxed, and calm. Your sleep sanctuary should be all about what enhances this tranquil space for you and infuses it with beautiful, high vibe energy, so you can wake up in the morning ready to share more of your writing with the world.

What is your favorite element in your bedroom? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

xoxo, Ana
